It’s Official: KIMS Renamed as KMCRI
Hubballi: The Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), a critical healthcare provider for North Karnataka, is set to undergo a significant transformation as it will now be known as the Karnataka Medical College and Research Institute (KMCRI).
Originally established in 1957 as Karnataka Medical College (KMC), the institution was renamed KIMS in 1996. After 28 years, the institute, which has been a lifeline for the people of North Karnataka, has officially been renamed KMCRI. The government issued a notification regarding this change on August 12, according to sources. This move follows the recent upgrades of similar colleges in Bengaluru and Mysuru to research institutes.
Doctors have highlighted the advantages of this upgrade, noting that when a medical college is elevated to the status of a research institute, it benefits from tax exemptions on imported medical equipment and gains access to additional facilities.
Sources also revealed that the new name, KMCRI, will be officially unveiled on KIMS’ Foundation Day, September 6. Leading up to the main event, the KIMS administration has planned a series of activities throughout the preceding week:
- August 31: A health check-up camp for journalists and their family members.
- September 1: A walkathon from KIMS to Tolankere.
- September 2: A street play performance.
- September 3: A walkathon for differently-abled individuals and a health check-up for the elderly and disabled.
- September 4: A mega blood donation camp.
- September 5: Teachers’ Day celebrations.
- September 6: The official unveiling of the new name on Foundation Day.
This week-long celebration will mark a new chapter for the institution as it transitions to KMCRI, reinforcing its commitment to medical education, research, and healthcare in the region.
